Using Social Media to Get Connected

In today's world it seems like social media is one the most frequently used technological resources. The use of social media helps millions of people all around the world to stay connected to love ones in various parts of the world, it is used to help spread awareness about an urgent cause, it is even used to promote businesses and organizations, and it is used to help long lost friends and relatives reconnect after many years of being apart. My past and present experiences with social media is that it has been a great way for me to stay connected to my family that lives in different areas of the country. It has also helped me to reconnected with old classmates as well. I have also used social media as a way to share with others about a cause that some of my friends support. For example, one of my friends who is affiliated with a literacy organization wanted to spread the word about a free book give away for children, so she was able to spread the word quickly using Facebook and their share option. With this option all of her friends were able to share the flyer to each of their pages. So this allowed many children and families to attend this free book giveaway.

I fee that social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube lend themselves to effective advocacy in that they are really user friendly apps and easy for the young and old to operate. They are also three of the most used apps as well. So if used as an advocacy tool many people will be able to learn about a cause that is near and dear to the heart. It's a great platform for this day and age.

I would use these tools to educate others by using random pictures of children and families and putting facts across the pictures. I have noticed this type of thing being done on Facebook. I notice that expressions will be made on pictures expressing a particular statement. So I would just take note of this idea and use it to spread the word about issues affecting children and families.

As my colleagues what suggestions would you offer me as I try to use social media to educate others?

I think you said it perfectly that social media is a useful way to advocate because it is very user-friendly. I have learned about many community events advocating for a cause because of a friend's post regarding a walk or gathering for various fund raising events or awareness for advocacy efforts. Using social media as a tool for awareness can be very beneficial to grab the attention of many people all at once.

Priscilla,
Since it is not a form of social media I use, I had not thought of YouTube. I think you have the way(s) to use Facebook effectively 'under your belt.' However, what about creating a video message for YouTube to spread the word about your cause? Then you could post the video link on Facebook, thus providing an additional avenue for spreading the word about your cause. I think the more avenues we can use the faster we can get the word out and promote the support for the changes that are needed.

When using social media, I would recommend keeping comments, pictures, and posts positive and truthful. When you are in this field, everyone scrutinizes everything you say.

Pricilla, I think that you tube is a great idea. I didn't even think of that. I have seen a lot of really good advocacy videos that would be perfect for access on you tube

Relationships

I currently have healthy relationships with my two sisters, my brother, my sons, my daughter, my father, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and colleagues. These relationships are healthy because we first take the time to acknowledge each other as individuals, keeping in mind that we come with our own beliefs, needs, desires, goals, and morals. Respecting each other and working through issues, help us to maintain open lines of communications. As we all know that no relationship is perfect, but being committed to forming strong relationships, can help everyone learn to be better people.

Personal Advocacy Reflection

I cannot pinpoint just one individual to talk about as it relates to advocacy and its effect on my life. There have been a number of people who have advocated and shared important information with me. So to name just one person would not be fair, because they all have impacted me greatly. All through-out my journey to pursue my higher learning education. These individuals have been very positive in sharing information as it relates to school and other opportunities. Because they were so supportive, I was able to pursue three separate degrees consecutively. They were also compassionate and encouraging as I raised my children as a young single mother. Through the sharing of vital information, I excelled higher and to greater places in my life. As a result of their kindness, I am paying it forward by sharing information and resources with others that may be looking to pursue a better life. I always find myself encouraging young mothers to do their best as mothers and to pursue more education in an effort to be a better provider for their young family. I pick up informative brochures and flyers that I come across when I'm out in the district for my job. I share those flyers and brochures with those young mothers and anyone else who's interested. I just believe that we must not be afraid to reach out to lending a helping hand, not a hand-out.

Relationship Reflection

As a mother of three, a sister, a daughter, a friend, and an employee, building and being apart of strong lasting relationships is very important to me. It is important to me, because it allows me to be accepted by my peers. It allows me to contribute to the lives of others in a positive way. It also allows me the grand opportunity to learn from the individuals I have relationships with. Learning how to give, receive, value the opinions of others, and agreeing to disagree are all some of the things I learn as I interact with my sisters, brothers, friends, children, and co-workers. Being able to see the world from the point of view of others is an awesome thing, because they can point out very important points, when our selfishness tend to rear it's head. Healthy relationships allow us to bear our feelings to others, our weaknesses revealed, enabling us to be strong by the strength and helping hands of others.
